On December 8 the working group biodiversity within the Animal Breeding and Genomics Centre (ABGC) initiated an international seminar to highlight the opportunities of genomics for conservation of animal genetic diversity. John Woolliams (Roslin Institute, UK) gave the opening lecture. He underlined the need for conservation in the process of sustainable intensification of food production with animals. The genomic revolution, the dense SNP genotyping at low costs, gives the possibilities to use footprints of selection for the detection of loci involved in adaptations. Martino Cassandro (University of Padova) illustrated the use of genomics in breeding programmes for local Italian breeds and in the development of regional products of these breeds.
